My name is Liwei Wu. I studied Statistics and Computer Science at University of California-Davis during 2014 - 2020. I got my machine learning PhD diploma in 2020 Spring. During my PhD study, my research focus was initially on designing and implementing novel machine learning and deep learning algorithms for recommender systems that can handle massive datasets. Recently I have been more interested in natural language processing research, especially its application within financial markets. Moreover, I am quite interested in the interaction of computer vision and NLP, which I think is quite promising. My research works have been published at top machine learning conferences KDD, ICML, NeurIPS, AISTATS and CVPR. I also review papers regualrly for ICML, NeurIPS to contribute back to the community. I was jointly advised by Professor Cho-Jui Hsieh and Professor James Sharpnack. I obtained MS in Statistics in 2016 and MS in Computer Science in 2018 along the way in doctoral program. Before moving to Davis, I received a BSc (First Class Honors) in Computing Mathematics from City University of Hong Kong in 2014. I did my undergraduate thesis on Extreme Value Thoery under supversion of Professor Xiang Zhou.

Currently, my girlfriend Shuqing and I are doing a starter-up project based on my machine learning research while waiting to start my machine learning engineer position at LinkedIn on June 1st 2020.

My Greatest Achievement

The one thing I am proudest of in my life is that I lost over 80 pounds of weight and finished a couple of full marathons, as one can easily tell the difference from the photos below. The first one was me back in 2013. The second and third ones is me at Big Sur during 2017 Spring Break.
